WGB is now Paleo Approved and Certified Paleo! What’s the difference?

September 16, 2016

Exciting news! Western Grassfed Beef (WGB) is now officially Paleo Approved and Certified Paleo by the Paleo Foundation! The Paleo Foundation is an amazing foundation that is dedicated to Forwarding the Paleo Movement™ by making it easy for consumers to make better lifestyle choices. You may be wondering what the difference is between Paleo Approved and Certified Paleo foods, and what it means for you.

Since the Paleo diet mirrors the way people ate during the Paleolithic time period, it promotes clean eating and encourages the elimination of foods our ancestors most likely didn’t consume. The idea is to allow for easy digestion, more complete nutrient absorption, and a highly efficient functioning body by eliminating foods that can disrupt these processes. Paleo Approved and Certified Paleo are labels that are only distributed by the Paleo Foundation to select business that meet their strict criteria. Their main purpose is to ease the struggle of grocery shopping for Paleo-eaters.

Soooo, what’s the difference?

Paleo Approved

According to the Paleo Foundation, Paleo Approved is the top tier of the Paleo Foundation’s certifications and awarded when a farm or ranch meets the strict conditions of the Paleo Foundation guidelines. Guidelines include that the cattle spend their entire lives on pastures, are never fed cereal grains, are never given hormones or sub-therapeutic antibiotics and are always treated and handled humanely. It is exclusive to single ingredient items. This means there can be no processing, no additives, nothing extra. The Paleo Approved logo guarantees the meat is 100% grass fed and finished and meets the Foundations strict criteria. Panorama Meats, which includes Western Grassfed Beef and Panorama Organic Beef brands, meets all of the Paleo Approved criteria and is now certified as Paleo Approved by the Paleo Foundation!

Certified Paleo

Certified Paleo is a Paleo certification for products and not the origin of the product. It pertains to products packaged with more than one ingredient or minimally processed products. Our 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks and our 100% Grass Fed Beef Bone Broth (Coming Soon!) are both Certified Paleo because both contain more than one ingredient and are minimally processed. Another important aspect for the certification is that all of the ingredients and processing must meet the Paleo Foundation’s criteria. There are no synthetic nitrites or nitrates, MSG, gluten, dairy, legumes, etc. – nothing that is considered non-compliant for the Paleo Diet. We are very proud that our Beef Sticks and Broth meet the Foundation’s strict Certified Paleo criteria!

As They Pertain to the Three Paleo Ideologies

There are varying degrees of Paleo. The three ideologies the majority of Paleo-lovers are:

  1. No packaged food. Period. If it has more than one ingredient, it is considered “packaged”. This coincides with the Paleo Approved label, as Paleo Approved mean there is only one ingredient. Example: steak.

  2. Packaged food still abiding by Paleo guidelines. This is where Certified Paleo steps in. It eases the burden of consumers by labeling packaged foods still adhering to Paleo standards. Example: soup.

  3. Paleo Friendly is the third ideology, and it plays primarily in the grey area of Paleo. Some food items, like healthy probiotic drinks, include organic cane sugar. It’s organic, non-GMO, and sugar in its most basic form. Some Paleo-lovers won’t include it in their diet, others will if the health benefits largely outweigh the deficit. This label notifies those who are ok with a little something extra in their food so long as it abides by the principles of Paleo.

What does this mean for you?

Essentially, what the Paleo Foundation has done is take all the difficult leg work out of sifting through labels and researching companies to ensure the food you are purchasing is in line with the Paleo Diet. There is a strict application process, verification and quality assurance of the claims are conducted, and the Foundation is authorized to perform surprise visits/inspections at any time to ensure the awarded company is continually abiding by the Paleo principles.
